Overview of Digital Literacy
Digital literacy is the element that is concerned with the teaching and learning about different technology and their use (Ribble, 2015). New technologies emerge rapidly and changes in existing technologies occur at a very fast pace. It is importance for us to help ourselves and each other to understand and learn how to use the new and existing. This could be extended to our household, workplaces, schools, and other institutions we encounter. We are responsible for learning and teaching technology since our lives and jobs will be impacted greatly by technology.
Connections to Digital Citizenship Theme
In the field of Human Resource Management (HRM), the element of digital literacy should be a consideration when developing your HRM practices. HRM professionals need to make sure their workforce is digitally ready for existing technologies that the organization use and for emerging ones. The importance here is that even if the individual's job does not involve technology, they may need to understand it to communicate with their boss, change their retirement or benefits, and check their pay stubs. Further, if we need certain skills in certain technology in the future, we need to cultivate those abilities either inside our organization or externally (e.g, partner with schools). There are various ways to achieve this: educational programs, training sessions, posting resources, and communicating community programs that may help.
HRM professionals could also often resources for technology that may impact the lives of their employees, even if they are not necessarily used in the organization. This will help with the satisfaction levels of their current workforce.
