Overview of Digital Security
Digital security is the element that is deals with the precautions put into place to protect our safety (Ribble, 2015). This may include the use of firewalls, anti-virus, or measures to protect our identities. We need to be aware of how vulnerable we may be if we fail to examine the measures in place to keep us safe. Have we updated our anti-virus on our PCs? Is the program actually running? Do we give our our personal information to any and all websites that ask for it? We need to think about our safety and the safety of others when we use technology. Often you see that companies or institutions will implement safety measures to be used by the company and the individuals.
Connections to Digital Citizenship Theme
In the field of Human Resource Management (HRM), the element of digital security should be a consideration when developing your HRM practices. Digital security stems across various HRM issues, such as the use of email, posting data about the company or peers, or protecting the personal information of the people that work for your company. Having training programs, resources, and policies about security as an employee and as an individual is a good foundation for any organization. However, there are some issues that are more serious that demand its own attention and policies. One such problem is identity theft but in the context as having your employees' identities stolen from your company files.
Fifty percent of data breaches that occurred within organizations are done by their own employees (Overflet, 2106). Therefore, HR Professionals need to work with IT professionals to ensure the safety of their employees' personal data. Measures need to put into place about who is accessing the employees' personal data and if large downloads have been conducted. Frequent monitoring needs to occur as well. Further, HR professionals need to communicate their efforts in place to assure their employees that their personnel data is being protected. This is critical since employees must provide their personnel data (e.g. social security number, date of birth, spouse information) in order to gain employment. Consequences for those internally who may be tempted to steal data from the company need to be emphasized, which should include criminal charges. The trust between employee and employer is critical for any working relationship and the safety of your personnel data is very sacred to this relationship.
