In Stage 1, we are attempting to answer the question “What is it that I want the students to understand, know, and be able to do?” (Wiggins & McTighe, 2011). The goal in this stage is to identify the desired results.
Understanding has two parts. The first part is about being able to apply understanding, skills, and knowledge effectively in new situations. This was result in successful transfer of learning. The second part is to have the ability to make inferences and new connections with your knowledge, skills, and understanding.
There are key areas that will guide us to achieving the result of understanding (Wiggins & McTighe, 2011). They include:.

There are key areas that will guide us to achieving the result of understanding (Wiggins & McTighe, 2011). They include:.
- Transfer: the ability to take your learning and use it in different situations.
- Meaning: an understanding of what you have learned and using this to analyze new experiences. Meaning is often shaped by essential questions and understandings.
- Acquisition – this is the knowledge and skills that guide our in the short-term.
Understand by Design (UbD) Stage #1 Overview
In this video, you will be introduced to the specific components that make up the Stage #1 Template. Hopefully, this will make completing this document a bit easier.
