Welcome to the workshop, “Understanding By Design (UbD).” I am so glad you are taking this workshop! The purpose of this online workshop is to introduce you to the UbD approach that was developed by Grany Wiggins and Jay McTighe (2011, 2012). The purpose of this approach is to help improve educators' skills is designing units of study. There are three stages in this approach. Each of the stages will be presented and a video will accompany each stage to help you complete the template.
You will find more information in the following sections about how the course will progress from stage to stage, the material that will be presented, and your instructor information.

To achieve success in completing this course, you will need to start with Stage 1 and proceed to the next stage only after the requirements for the stage have been completed. The requirements for each stage will include reading the stage overview and reviewing the video with instructions on how to complete the template for the stage. Finally, you will be complete a formative assessment to gauge your understanding. You will find references are offered at each stage in case you desire more readings in one particular stage.
Understanding by Design (UbD) Overview

Understanding by Design (UbD) was developed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe. Their hope was to develop a method to would enhance meaningful understanding and transfer of learning (Wiggins & McTighe, 2011). Their approach builds on the idea of "backward design". There are 3 stages in this backward design. Stage 1, "Identify Desired Results", helps instructors develop the outcomes they want their students to gain by the end of the course/unit. Stage 2, "Determine Acceptable Evidence", guides instructor to develop evidence to gauge if their students are meeting the desired outcomes from Stage 1. Stage 3, "Plan Learning Experiences", considers the student perspectives in planning out your experiences in learning from your student. Stage 3 will set the stage for achieving Stage 1 & Stage 1. A successful design aligns all three stages. This workshop will guide you through each stage.
Instructor Information
I am Kim Lukas and I will be your instructor for this workshop. I am currently an Assistant Professor who teaches a variety of HR courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I hope you enjoy the workshop and find many takeaways to improve your course structure and enhance your students’ understanding and transfer of learning.
